There are cakes that mark a birthday. There are cakes that mark a wedding. And then there are cakes that mark a life.
“In 2023, Lynette Stubbs of Luxe Layers Cakery created a custom retirement cake in Miami that did exactly that.”
In 2023, Lynette Stubbs was commissioned to create the retirement celebration cake for Chief Yoli Alvarez of the City of Miami Fire Department. At the time, Lynette’s custom cake studio was still operating under its original name. The business was young. The skills were sharp but still developing. And the order that came in would become one of the most significant moments in the studio’s history not just because of what the cake looked like, but because of who it was for and what her story represented.
Miami’s First Hispanic Female District Fire Chief

Chief Yoli Alvarez spent 33 years in service. She grew up in Wynwood, raised by a single mother who told her that hard work could take her anywhere. She took that literally. At 18 she joined the United States Army, trained as a Morse code interceptor, and was assigned to the National Security Agency. By her late 20s she was ready to come home and serve Miami directly. She enrolled in the fire academy.
From Army Soldier to Miami First Responder
She was 112 pounds walking in. The gear weighed more than she did. She has said publicly that she will never tell you it was easy, because it was not. It was brutally hard. She did it anyway.
She graduated. She worked her first call a pregnant woman who had overdosed, and neither the mother nor the baby survived. She showed up the next day. She kept going.
33 Years of Service With the City of Miami Fire Rescue
Over 33 years she worked her way from firefighter to lieutenant to district chief, overseeing five fire stations, the Technical Rescue Team, and the dive team. When she retired, she did so as the first Hispanic female district chief fire officer in the history of the City of Miami Fire Department. WSVN Channel 7 News featured her story as part of their 7 Spotlight series, honoring a career that broke barriers most people in her position never even approached.
A Personal Connection Behind the Custom Cake Order
The connection between Chief Alvarez and Lynette Stubbs came through personal history. Lynette had worked with the Chief’s wife years earlier. They stayed in touch through social media. When the retirement party was being planned, the call came in to Lynette to make the cake.
She remembers that moment clearly.
Designing a Custom Retirement Cake in Miami Worthy of a Legacy
Building this custom retirement cake in Miami took approximately 10 to 14 hours from start to finish. The cake itself was constructed across three separate flavors vanilla, carrot, and lemon all layered with cream cheese frosting and covered in smooth fondant. The fondant surface gave Lynette the canvas she needed for the detailed sculpted work the design required. A fire hydrant was built from scratch. A firefighter helmet was sculpted with personalized department details. The Miami Fire Rescue emblem was recreated and placed on the cake. Flame accents, a fire axe, and additional firefighting elements completed the tribute, each piece placed with care and intention.
The Most Challenging Part of a Sculpted Custom Cake
Getting the sculpted elements structurally sound while maintaining the realism required across the full design was the most demanding part of the build. Fondant work at that level of detail does not leave room for error. Every piece has to hold.

The Moment That Changed Everything for Luxe Layers Cakery
When the cake was delivered to the City of Miami Fire Department and the Chief saw it for the first time, something shifted for Lynette. This cake one of her earliest custom designs had been placed at the center of a celebration honoring one of the most accomplished women in Miami’s public service history. A woman who had been told no by circumstance and said yes anyway. A woman who carried more weight than most people would ever know and kept climbing.
For Lynette, it was the moment she understood what her craft could mean. Not just the design. Not just the flavor. But the ability to stand at the table of someone’s most important moments and say, without words, that what they accomplished mattered enough to be marked.
That understanding has shaped every cake Luxe Layers Cakery has produced since.
